The coming decades will be characterised by a gradual transition to a more sustainably built environment. Buildings and areas will be developed in more sustainable manners. Different chains (water, waste, energy, materials) will be closed and interlinked, sustainable buildings will become net energy-generating entities. The energy supply will be turned upside-down: from central fossil energy sources to decentralised scattered and fluctuating renewable resources. Fortunately, there is no energy problem. There is an abundance of renewable energy in solar, wind and biomass. Technically, this clean energy can be properly harvested. Moreover, sustainable solutions are often cheaper over a lifetime perspective.
Key to succes of sustainable solutions in the built environment is to connect technology, management and finance in a holistic approach.
